Clear elastic for reinforcing neckline

I am knitting October by {Petite Knits}. She suggests using elastic to reinforce the neckline line. Does anyone have a suggestion on the best elastic to use? I am using a Dk weight yarn. When I try the unfinished sweater on the neckline is huge. Can you help? Thanks.
